New Delhi: It was a double delight for India in the men’s javelin throw F46 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Tuesday as Ajeet Singh and Sundar Gurjar won a medal apiece at the Stad de France. Ajeet clinched the silver medal with an impressive throw of 65.62m while Gurjar bagged the bronze medal with his best throw of 64.96m.
The Indian duo finished behind Cuba’s Guillermo Varona Gonzalez, who won the gold medal with an area record throw of 66.14m in the final of the men’s javelin F46 event. Gonzalez set the record for the longest throw by any player at the venue of the final in Paris. There were a total of three Indians featuring in the final and the trio dominated the proceedings but couldn’t grab all three spots on the podium.
Rinku was India’s third participant in the final and he finished 5th on the standings with his season best effort of 61.58m. While Gonzalez acquired the top spot right from the first couple of throws with his monstrous 66.14m throw in his second attempt, the Indians were in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th spot at one stage in the final. However, Rinku finished behind Mexico’s Eliezer Gabriel, who recorded a best effort of 61.65m.
Ajeet was trailing at number three for most of the final until he produced a brilliant throe of 65.62m in his fifth attempt and came closest to beating Gonzalez. With his fifth throw, Ajeet went past Gurjar, who was in the second spot to acquire the silver medal position while his Indian compatriot slipped to the 3rd spot.
2nd successive medal for Sundar Gurjar at Paralympics
It was Ajeet’s maiden medal for India at the Paralympics while it was the second successive medal for Gurjar at the showpiece event. Gurjar, who holds the world record in the men’s javelin F46 category, looked in fine rhythm in the final but couldn’t produce his best to grab the top spot on the podium.
Nonetheless, he managed to win his second successive medal having won a bronze medal in the same category at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. Ajeet and Gurjar’s twin medals meant India have now won a total of three medals in men’s javelin at the Paris Paralympics 2024 with Sumit Antil winning the gold medal in men’s F64 category on Tuesday.
