New Delhi: The water quality of the Seine River has dropped due to the heavy rain in Paris due to which all 11 triathlon events have been cancelled on September 1. The events are now scheduled to take place on Monday, September 2, subject to further testing.
Heavy rain hit the French capital on Friday and Saturday due to which wastewater flowed into the river, leading to a rise of bacteria levels in the Seine. The disruption caused another problem in the city’s effort to clean up the river for future public use.
The issue also disrupted the Olympics Triathlon and open-water swimming events, with many practice sessions cancelled due to the high level of pollution. Only 5 events out of the 11 got the green light from the organisers.
Despite the heavy $1.5 billion investment to improve the Paris sewerage and water treatment system, the authorities have failed to control the pollution.
Official statement from World Triathlon confirmed the postponement
An official statement from World Triathlon confirmed the decision to postpone the events after testing on Sunday morning.
“The latest tests show a decrease in water quality in the river following the rain episodes over the last two days. As a result, the water quality at the competition venue on Sunday, 1 September is not suitable for swimming and above the threshold established by World Triathlon” the statement read.
“It has been decided to schedule all 11 para-triathlon medal events on 2 September. This is subject to the forthcoming water tests complying with the established World Triathlon thresholds for swimming.
“Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes and with these conditions, the para-triathlon events cannot take place today”.
