Paris 2024 Olympics: After rail-network, vandalists sabotage fibre optic networks in France

New Delhi: Days after the country’s high-speed rail was brought to its knees after sabotage activities, vandalists targeted the fibre optic networks of several telecommunications operators. According to local reports, operations in at least six areas across the country were “sabotaged”. However,  Paris remained unaffected by the attack, police said on Monday.

According to reports, cables in electrical cabinets had been cut in southern France while the installations in the Meuse region near Luxembourg and the Oise area near Paris had been vandalised, impacting fixed-line services.

The shocking incident occurred three days after coordinated attacks by arsonists paralysed high-speed train services in the country ahead of the Olympics opening ceremony. The coordinated sabotage activities disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of people.

French railway company SNCF revealed that its employees worked 24×7 in adverse weather conditions to improve the rail traffic from the north, east and west to Paris in their efforts to resume train services across the country.

Man detained regarding rail-network attack

Meanwhile, French authorities arrested an activist belonging to an ultra-left movement regarding the rail attacks that paralysed the rail network across France. The man was arrested at a site belonging to national rail operator SNCF, the French rail company.

The man, who was held at Oissel in northern France on Sunday, had access keys to SNCF technical premises along with tools and literature linked to the ultra-left, according to an unnamed source.

He was held in police custody for questioning in Rouen, a city in France’s Normandy region.
