Paris 2024 Olympics Men’s football: A look at previous years’ champions

New Delhi: Football has been one of the most followed games in the Olympics ever since the start of the competition. It has been played in every competition except for 1932, when it wasn’t one of the events in the Olympics to give space for the FIFA World Cup, recently held in 1930, to gain the same popularity. 

The men’s football tournament in the Olympics underwent multiple changes in the post-World War world before it became what we know today as a U-23 tournament. The Paris Olympics 2024 will see sixteen teams compete in seven venues across France. Over the years, this has become the platform for lesser-known players appearing on the big stage for their nation. 

The defending champions, Brazil, will look to become the first team to win three consecutive gold medals. They have won gold twice, one silver (London 2012), and two bronze (Atlanta 1996 and Beijing 2008). Argentina are joint with Brazil in terms of gold medals, winning back-to-back in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.  They have won one silver in Athens 1996.

From the angle of the squad, Argentina are one of the strongest sides to finish the podium and win the gold as well. They are coming to the competition after a World Cup and Copa America triumph. Their squad features four players from the World Cup-winning squad. Spain, too, will be coming to France after being crowned Euro Champion this year. All eyes will be on Brazil as to how they retain their gold medal for the third consecutive time after an underwhelming performance in the recently concluded Copa.
