Paris 2024 Olympics Women’s football: A look at previous years’ champions

New Delhi: Sports most often invite diversity and inclusivity, and the Olympics is one of the biggest sporting events to do so. It is open to participation without discrimination, and the inclusion of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament since 1996 is a sign of that. The eighth edition of this event will be held between 25 July and 10 August in France. The games will be played nationwide in seven cities, with 12 teams participating in the competition.

Currently, The USA is the most successful team in the tournament, having won four of the first five editions(Atlanta 1996, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012). They also have one silver (Sydney 2000) and one bronze medal (Tokyo 2020) each. They have only failed to win a medal in Rio 2016 but took bronze in Tokyo 2020. They are followed by Germany with one gold from Rio 2016 and three bronze medals (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008).

Canada won silver in the 2012 and 2016 Games before taking gold from Tokyo 2020. Norway were the first team to break the USA’s Olympic dominance when they won Gold in the Sydney Olympics in the 2000 edition, and the previous edition won bronze. Apart from them, Brazil have won silver twice  (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008), as have Sweden  (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020). Japan and China have won silver each (London 2012 and Atlanta 1996, respectively).

USA are still the favourites to finish on the podium with their new Emma Hayes working with a pool of talented players. The team with the best shot at winning the gold will be Spain after their World Cup victory last year. Defending champions, Canada will look to retain their place on the podium and win a back-to-back gold medal.
