New Delhi: Argentina and Spain have made a couple of major changes to their kits in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics tournament. The two sides are favourites to win the tournament, with Spain lifting the European Championship for the fourth time and Argentina defending their Copa America title just weeks ago.
Regulations require all teams in the Olympics to wear their national flag on their jerseys rather than their football association logo. However, Argentina and Spain had to adhere to other rules regarding their jerseys. This is why there is a major difference between their regular shirt and the one they are playing with during the Olympics. Both teams’ kits are manufactured by Adidas. During the recently concluded Copa America and Euro 2024 tournaments, the kits had a large Adidas logo on the shirt’s right. Both teams’ logos have been much smaller than usual in the ongoing Olympic tournament.
The rules also require branding to be in one place only, which is why the three Adidas stripes have disappeared from the sleeves of both jerseys. Iraq is also partnered with Adidas and have made the necessary adjustments. The strict rules and regulations regarding branding for the event cohere with those set by the Olympic Committee and are beyond FIFA’s jurisdiction. The rest of the teams in the competition are mostly sponsored by either Nike or Puma. Teams like the USA, who are sponsored by Nike, were required to make only one change in their jersey from Copa America, removing just the USA Football Federation logo with the nation’s flag.
The action involving the 16 teams kicked off on Wednesday. Spain continued their fantastic form, winning the game 2-1 against Uzbekistan, while Argentina suffered one of the most controversial defeats ever against Morocco. Defending champions Brazil started well, winning 1-0 against Nigeria and are now looking to become the first team ever to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals.
