Paris Olympics 2024, India’s Day 2 Schedule: Manu Bhaker eyes gold; Sindhu, Zareen in action

New Delhi: The second day of the Paris Olympics 2024 for India will be headlined by young shooter Manu Bhaker who successfully qualified for the final event of women’s 10m air pistol after finishing third in the qualification round on Sunday. This was probably the only silver lining for the Indian contingent on the opening day. Along with Bhaker, the India women’s archery team will also target medals, who, if qualified, can vie for a gold medal as well on the same day.

Although many athletes across other sports won their opening group stage fixtures like the Indian men’s hockey team and the famed badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the day started with the Indian shooters failing to rank higher in the leaderboard for the mixed team event. It was a dull performance in the men’s individual event as Arjun Singh Cheema and Sarabjot Singh couldn’t make it to the final rounds. Sarabjot missed the eighth and final qualifying position only by a missed inner-10.

The day moved forward with rower Balraj Panwar making it to the repechages of men’s singles sculls after finishing fourth in the heats. Manu made it to the finals and kept the hopes alive for her maiden Olympic medal. She has a chance to script history as she will become the first Indian female shooter to claim gold at the Olympics.

The Indian shuttlers (Lakshya Sen, Chirag-Satwik) took centerstage as they won their respective first group stage fixtures and the Indian men’s hockey team grabbed a momentous win against New Zealand as well. The day ended with boxer Preeti Pawar qualifying for the next round while the pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto faced a defeat in the women’s doubles group match.

Nonetheless on Day 2, India have a plethora of events coming up on their way and it will again start with the shooters who will be up in their individual qualification rounds. The day also has games scheduled for ace shuttler PV Sindhu, boxer Nikhat Zareen, and the Indian paddlers as well. The Indian swimmers will also be in action along with tennis stars Sumit Nagal, Rohan Bopanna, and N. Sriram Balaji.
