Paris Olympics 2024: India’s medal tally after men’s hockey bronze and Neeraj Chopra’s silver

New Delhi: India added two more medals to their tally at the Paris Olympics 2024 – one each in team event and individual category and put an end to the seven-day drought that saw India medal-less in the French capital. With the help of the men’s hockey team, India added another bronze medal on the 13th day (Thursday) which was finished with a silver-medal effort by ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

Both events were of high gravity as India laid hopes on the men’s hockey team and Neeraj Chopra’s shoulders to put some weight on the dismal campaign of the Indian contingent. Both delivered when it mattered the most and increased India’s medal count by winning two more to improve the nation’s table rankings of the marquee event. India spent over a week with just three medals but the tally has now risen to five and has brought India a bit up in the standings.

It all started with Manu Bhaker opening India’s tally at the Games with a bronze-medal effort in the women’s 10m air pistol event. The 22-year-old girl didn’t stop there and added one more bronze alongside Sarabjot Singh in the mixed team 10m air pistol event and etched herself in the history of Indian sports by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals in a single edition at the Olympics.

On August 1, it was the turn of shooter Swapnil Kusale who clinched another bronze medal for India while partaking in the men’s 50m rifle (three positions). India stood three medals strong in the tally but the upcoming days remained quite poor for the nation. On the 13th day, it was expected that two medals would be assured and it ultimately turned out to be the case.

Thanks to Neeraj Chopra and the Harmanpreet Singh-led men’s hockey team, India claimed a bronze and the first silver medal of the Summer Games 2024. India remained in the ranking of 50s for most of the days but the better performances of other nations have slipped India a bit more in the standings despite of their addition of two more medals.

India are currently placed 64th in the Paris Olympics 2024 medals table with five medals in total – a silver and four bronze.

Neeraj Chopra rode high on confidence and looked determined enough to defend his gold medal but had to settle for a silver after his arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan registered a new Olympic record with a monstrous throw of 92.97 metres while Neeraj’s best and only legitimate throw was of 89.45 metres – his season’s best effort.
