New Delhi: Indian shooter Sarabjot Singh missed the qualification mark in the men’s 10m air pistol event. On a day when Indian shooters failed to live up to the expectations with some early exits in the mixed teams of 10m air rifle, Sarabjot’s performance was the best among the uninspired, though not satisfactory.
After a series of six shooting rounds in the men’s 10m air pistol, Sarabjot accounted for a total score of 577. His scores read 94, 97, 96, 100, 93, 97. The 22-year-old youngster was levelled at the aggregate score with Germany’s Robin Walter (both scoring 577 after six shots). However, the German shooter prevailed at eighth position after he shot 17 X’s while the Indian was jut one short with 16 X’s.
What is X in shooting and how does it determine results in case of tiebreakers?
There are various scoring areas placed in the form of circles on a shooting cardboard. The scoring points ranges from 7 to 10 points. In the 10 scoring area, the innermost area of the highest target is called X. Basically, the innermost ring. In cases when 10m air pistol shooters end on a tiebreaker after the competition then the shooter with most X’s is considered to be the winner.
That’s what happened in Sarabjot Singh’s case as they Haryana shooter missed just one X in the 33-men qualification round.

How Sarabjot Singh missed his chance?
With some decent starts with scores of 94, 97, 96 in the first three series, Sarabjot was in his zone and a perfect 100 put him in the top 8. He later stuttered after only managing 93 in the fifth series. Although a tremendous effort of 97 in the final round was laudable for a fightback, Sarabjot missed the qualification by a whisker.
Serbia’s 40-year-old Damir Mikec topped the qualification round with a score of 584 followed by Italian Federico Nilo Maldini (581) and German Christian Reitz (580).
