Paris Paralympics 2024, India’s Day 5 schedule: Suhas Yathiraj, Sumit Antil eye gold medals

New Delhi: India have enjoyed an excellent start at the Paris Paralympics 2024 having won seven medals at the Games already, including one gold medal. India added two medals to their tally on Sunday with Preethi Pal bagging a bronze medal in the women’s 200m T35 event and long jumper Nishad Kumar winning a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 category.

India are expected to add multiple medals to their tally on Day 5 of the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday, September 02 as several para-athletes will be in contention for podium finishes in their respective categories. Indians will be in action in multiple events across para-athletics, para-badminton and para-archery among others.

Shuttler Suhas Yathiraj will be eyeing a gold medal when he takes on France’s Lucas Mazur in the final of the men’s singles SL4 category. Suhas defeated Indian compatriot Sukant Kadam 21-17, 21-12 in the semi-final on Sunday to enter the final. Having won a silver medal in the Tokyo Paralympics, he will be hoping to bag the elusive gold this time around.

Sumit Antil will be competing in the final of the men’s javelin throw F64 event and will be looking to defend the gold medal that he won at the Tokyo Paralympics. Apart from Suhas and Antil, India’s Yogesh Kathuniya will also be in contention to win a gold medal when he takes the field in the final of the men’s discus throw F56 category.

Shuttler Nithya Sre Sivan will be in contention to win two medals on Day 5 as she will pair up with Sivarajan Solaimalai to take on the Indonesian pair of Subhan and Marlina in the bronze medal match in the mixed doubles SH6 category before facing Rina Marlina in the bronze medal match in women’s singles SH6 category.

India are in the fray for a total of three gold medals in para-badminton on Day 5 as Thulasimathi Murugesan will take on China’s Yang Quixia in the women’s singles SU5 gold medal match while Nitesh Kumar will be up against Daniel Bethell of Great Britain in the gold medal match in the men’s singles SL3 category. India can will a total of 7 medals in badminton alone on Day 5, including 3 gold medals.
