New Delhi: Australian skipper Pat Cummins joined the legendary Kapil Dev and others in an elite list after dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma during the visitors’ first innings on Day 4 of the ongoing 3rd Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. Cummins sent Rohit packing cheaply on just 10 to hand Australia their first breakthrough on Day 4.
Rohit and KL Rahul resumed India’s first innings from 52/4 on Day 4. Both batters were aiming to build a big partnership to help India stage a fightback in the game. However, the Indian skipper failed to deliver once again as he was dismissed cheaply on 10 runs by Cummins in the 24th over. Rohit edged a slightly outside off delivery from Cummins and was caught by wicket-keeper Alex Carey.
It was the 4th time Cummins dismissed Rohit as Australia’s captain in Test cricket to join an elite list of bowlers to have dismissed the opposition captains most times as skipper in the longest format. Kapil dismissed West Indies skipper Clive Llyod as captain 4 times in Tests while Richie Benaud dismissed Peter May as captain 4 times in the format.
The elite list is topped by Benaud, who also dismissed former England captain Ted Dexter five times as a skipper in Tests. Ex-Pakistan skipper Imran Khan is in the 2nd spot having dismissed former India captain Sunil Gavaskar 5 times. Cummins has now joined some of the yesteryear greats after making Rohit his bunny in Tests.
