New Delhi: The Australian duo of Pat Cummins and Travis Head are likely to return to India to rejoin the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad for the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. IPL 2025 was suspended last week due to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, however, the league is set to resume on Saturday, May 17 after both countries announced a ceasefire.
BCCI on Monday announced an updated schedule for the resumption of IPL 2025. The remaining 13 league matches will be played at six venues – Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru. However, the venues for the playoffs are yet to be decided. Originally, Kolkata was scheduled to host the 2nd Qualifier and the final.
While the league is set to resume, many franchises are still worried about the return of their overseas players, who flew back home following the suspension of IPL 2025 last week. There have been reports that many players are still apprehensive about returning despite the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan.
Cummins, Head tell SRH they will be back
As per a report in ESPN Cricinfo, skipper Cummins and star batter Head have told the SRH management that they will return to India for the remainder of the season. Both players had returned to Australia last week, but have decided to head back to complete the season despite being named in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s from June 11.
“Pat has a responsibility as captain of the franchise and is looking at returning,” Cummins’ manager Neil Maxwell told Australian news channel News Corp.
While Cummins and Head might rejoin the SRH squad soon, there is no confirmation yet about when the other overseas players in their squad will return. SRH’s overseas players like Heinrich Klaasen, Wiaan Mulder, Eshan Malinga and Kamindu Mendis had all returned home following the suspension of IPL 2025, and it remains uncertain by when they will rejoin the squad.
SRH out of the race for the playoffs
Sunrisers Hyderabad have heavily struggled in the ongoing IPL 2025 and are already out of the race for the playoffs. SRH, who made it to the final last season, have managed only 3 wins in 11 matches this season and are at the 8th spot on the points table with six points. They have only three matches remaining in the tournament.
As per the new schedule, the league stage will conclude on May 27, and SRH will play their final game on Sunday, May 25. This would allow both Cummins and Head enough time to return home before heading to England with the Australian squad for the WTC final against South Africa, which will be played at Lord’s, starting June 11.
