‘Pay acha hai but boss toxic hai’: Sanjiv Goenka reacts to viral Rishabh Pant meme

New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka recently reacted to a hilarious meme that has gone viral on social media after his franchise managed to sign Rishabh Pant at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. LSG went all out to secure Pant’s signature at the auction as they paid a whopping Rs 27 crore to buy the Indian wicket-keeper batter.

Thanks to LSG’s record bid, Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history at Rs 27 crore. He surpassed his India teammate Shreyas Iyer, who was bought for Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings in the same auction. Pant left Delhi Capitals (DC) to enter the IPL 2025 mega auction and was one of the favourites to emerge as the costliest buy.

Soon after LSG signed Pant, memes around his big-money move flooded social media. One particular meme went viral which had a picture of former LSG skipper KL Rahul with his arm around Pant with the caption – “Dekh bhai company achi hai, pay acha hai, par boss bohot toxic hai”. The meme left fans in splits and went viral in no time.

LSG owner Goenka was asked about the same during an interview on Times Now. While he admitted he was not aware of the exact meme, he said as an owner, he is loving and caring but also demanding and tough. Goenka said he can give his players love when needed and also scold them when required.

“Meme maine dekhi nahi hai but mai itna keh sakta hu ki boss loving bhi hai caring bhi hai tough bhi hai. Jab love ki jarurat hoti hai toh love deta hai, jab care ki jarurat hoti hai toh caring hai aur jab daant ki jarurat hoti hai toh daant bhi deta hai. (I haven’t seen the meme but all I can say is boss is loving, caring and tough. I will give my players love when needed and care when needed. But I will also scold them if required),” Goenka said on Times Now.

The meme was referring to Goenka’s treatment of former LSG skipper Rahul during his time with the franchise. The LSG owner was seen scolding Rahul and venting out his frustration in a public outburst after LSG’s loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024 earlier this year. Though the duo mended their relationship later, Rahul was eventually released by LSG ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Will Rishabh Pant lead LSG in IPL 2025?

After letting go of Rahul and replacing him with Pant by bidding a record Rs 27 crore for the Indian wicket-keeper batter, LSG is yet to announce their captain for the next season. Pant is a strong contender to lead the team considering he has significant experience as a captain in the IPL and has also led India in T20Is.

However, some reports have also suggested that LSG might hand over captaincy to Nicholas Pooran, who they retained for Rs 21 crore ahead of the auction. South Africa batter Aiden Markram is another potential candidate for captaincy in the LSG squad for next season.
