New Delhi: Pakistan might not play in 2026 T20 World Cup in India if they refuse to travel across the border for Champions Trophy.
The Pakistan Cricket Board remain keen to host the 2025 Champions Trophy in its entirety in the country despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India insisting on waiting in the Indian government’s approval to send the team.
India’s refusal to play in Pakistan had earlier forced Asia Cup to be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches in Pakistan and nine matches in Sri Lanka.
With the Champions Trophy set to be played in February, preparations are in full swing in Pakistan to stage the major ICC trophy in a grand manner.
But India’s refusal to commit has frustrated Pakistan with a Geo News Urdu stating that the PCB remains firm in hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan.
Reports suggesting proposals of hosting the tournament hybrid model have floated around. But the report from the Pakistani media publication state that the PCB will oppose hybrid model proposals during ICC’s annual conference in Colombo from July 19-22.
Earlier it was reported that the BCCI could request the International Cricket Council of adopting a hybrid model to stage the tournament, with Sri Lanka and Dubai preferred as potential second venues.
India have refused to tour India since the 2008 Asia Cup citing security concerns though Pakistan have insisted on providing maximum security.
Due to long-drawn geo-political tensions, the two cricket teams only meet at major ICC events with Pakistan travelling to India for the ODI World Cup last year.
This impasse has put ICC in a fix as it tries to balance the interests of the two major cricketing powerhouses while maintaining the integrity of its international tournaments.
