‘People picking bones out of comment after a poor week’: Head dismisses rift rumours

New Delhi: Travis Head understands the criticism Australia have coped after their capitulation against India in the first Test. He also thinks it is deserved too but doesn’t want people to go overboard.

Hence he dismissed rumours of a division in the team that some former players alluded to after Josh Hazlewood pointed fingers at Australian batters for their flop show in both innings at Perth.

Australia lost at Optus stadium by 295 runs, their heaviest margin of victory on home soil against India. It was also he first time since 2018 that Australia lost the opening test of a home series.

“I think (people have) picked the bones out of a comment on the back of a poor week, which is fine,” Head told 7NEWS.

“It’s OK to be critical, we understand that. We stuck together, had some good conversations, definitely no fractions. All the boys hung out together last night.”

The left handed batter also said the team has stuck together after the heavy defeat and has spoken about it. Head scored a fighting 89 to be Australia’s highest scorer in their second innings but it didn’t prove to be enough.

Cummins’ comment

Earlier, Australia skipper captain Pat Cummins also rubbished talks of potential conflict between batters and bowlers in the team.

Cummins, who led the team to ODI World Cup triumph over India last year, said the current Australian outfit is one of the most closely knit teams he has ever been part of.

“There’s plenty of times where the batters have dragged us bowlers out of tight situations and we’ve done the same,” said Cummins.

“It’s probably one of the tightest teams I’ve ever played with. We really enjoy playing cricket together. We’ve been through a lot the last few years, the core group. So no problems there. Everyone gets along really well, so all good.”

The second Test begins in Adelaide on December 6 where Australia would hope to bounce back after trailing 0-1 in the five match series.
