New Delhi: In a remarkable turn of events at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju achieved his first-ever classical victory over former World No.1 Magnus Carlsen in round six. The match saw Carlsen in a dominant position for most of the game but things took a dramatic twist when the Norwegian made a critical error under time pressure, and the Indian star made no error, seizing the opportunity to secure victory.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Gukesh, highlighting the young champion’s brilliance and dedication. In a post on X (formerly Twitter,) PM Modi states, “An exceptional achievement by Gukesh! Congratulations to him for triumphing over the very best. His first-ever win against Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025 showcases his brilliance and dedication. Wishing him continued success in the journey ahead.”

The victory not only marks a personal milestone for the Indian grandmaster but also positions him as only the second Indian player, after R Praggnanandhaa, to defeat Carlsen in this prestigious tournament.

Carlsen was visibly frustrated following the defeat as he slammed his fist on the table before appreciating Gukesh with a handshake and a pat on the back. Gukesh displayed sportsmanship and commented about the incident, saying, “I have also banged a lot of tables in my career,” acknowledging the emotional intensity of high-level chess.

The victory was a major shock but this isn’t to take anything away from Gukesh’s skills if anything, it highlights just how much Carlsen has ruled the game in recent times. Many even regard him as one of the greatest chess players ever, not just in this era. The Indian star now trails just behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana in the tournament standings, setting the stage for an exciting finish to Norway Chess 2025.
