New Delhi: Filmmaker Payal Kapadia has made India proud by winning the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival for her film, All We Imagine As Light. This historic achievement has garnered praise from none other than Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who lauded her for her creativity and for inspiring a new generation of storytellers.

PM Modi took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to extend his congratulations. He acknowledged Kapadia’s remarkable accomplishment, noting that she has inspired an entire new generation of filmmakers. Calling it a historic milestone, Modi wrote, “India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her work All We Imagine as Light.”

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light

Payal’s All We Imagine As Light claimed the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, marking a significant moment in Indian cinema. She is the first Indian filmmaker to win this coveted award. The Grand Prix is the second-most prestigious prize at Cannes, following the Palme d’Or. Her film is also notable for being the first Indian film in 30 years and the first ever by an Indian female director to be showcased in the main competition at Cannes.

At the awards ceremony, held on the final day of the festival, Payal was joined by the film’s cast members Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. They received the Grand Prix from American actor Viola Davis. The competition was fierce, with entries from renowned directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Paolo Sorrentino, Paul Schrader, and Yorgos Lanthimos.
