A recent Morning Consult poll reveals that 60% of voters believe President Joe Biden should “definitely” or “probably” be replaced as the Democratic candidate following his performance in Thursday’s debate.
The survey, which included 2,068 respondents, was released to Axios on Friday and highlights growing concerns within the Democratic Party about Biden’s candidacy.
Key Findings
The poll results reflect increasing whispers among Democrats about the possibility of replacing Biden. Among Democratic voters specifically, 21% say Biden should “definitely not” be replaced, while 20% say “probably not”.
When asked to choose between Biden and former President Donald Trump, 45% of respondents favored Biden, with 44% choosing Trump. This near tie in voter preference mirrors the results of a similar poll conducted after Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records linked to a $130,000 hush money payment.
Debate Performance
Despite the poll showing Biden maintaining a slight edge over Trump, 57% of those who watched the debate felt Trump outperformed Biden. This includes 19% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and a whopping 93% of Republicans.
What is the Biden campaign saying?
Seth Schuster, a spokesperson for Biden’s campaign, criticized the framing of the poll results. Schuster emphasized that Biden is still leading Trump by one point and firmly stated, “Joe Biden is not dropping out.”
The data from the poll was collected through online interviews and was weighted to represent a target sample of registered voters. The margin of error is +/- 2 percentage points, according to Morning Consult.
This latest poll underscores the ongoing debate and divisions within the Democratic Party as they consider the best path forward in the upcoming presidential election.
