New Delhi: The much-awaited player retention rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) might have to go through a bit of delay as it is being said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could postpone the announcement until the end of the month. The BCCI were to reveal its decision by the end of August but a latest report claims that there will be an additional delay in the release of the retention rules.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, the information regarding the BCCI deferring the announcement is circulating among the IPL franchise owners and officials, and it shouldn’t be a surprise if the decision is unveiled during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is scheduled in Bengaluru on September 29.
The report also includes that there is no direct link between the AGM and IPL policies which means that the BCCI might surprise everyone by releasing the set of rules in the next few days. But the IPL officials believe that the announcement might take at least 10 days to two weeks. While no confirmation from the BCCI has been made, the officials, who approached them for the retention rules, have hinted at a delay to the franchises.
As the August deadline for the decision approached, franchise officials reached out to the BCCI and were informed of a further delay by the cricket governing body. It has been understood that the franchises may have time until November 15 to finalise their decision on the retentions, regardless of the time of the decision’s arrival. The auction for IPL 2025, which is likely to be scheduled in December, will surely feature the Right to Match (RTM) options.
Retired players to play as uncapped?
The discussion over the retired international cricketers being placed in the “uncapped” category for the next IPL has been around the corner for quite some time now. Although the move is yet to be finalised, it will surely be debatable if that will affect the auction purse majorly. Ever since the reports surfaced, the name of Indian stalwart MS Dhoni was buoyed as well.
It is understood that the policy isn’t specifically aimed at placing Dhoni in the uncapped category and helping the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK). If Dhoni plays for a season more, it would be in the interest of the league only. The CSK officials have also maintained that if Dhoni opts to play the next season, he would be one of their retentions, even if the BCCI permits just two.
The BCCI is due to announce its decision on the Indian Premier League (IPL) player retention rule for the upcoming season which is expected to happen before the 2025 auction. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
