New Delhi: Brighton hosted their first game of the season and won 2-1 against Manchester United, while Erik ten Hag lost to the Seagulls for the fourth time in five games. Despite creating quite a few chances throughout the game, United never had full control over the game.
Danny Welbeck helped Brighton take an early lead in the game in the 32nd minute. Welbeck opened the deadlock when Kaoru Mimota kept the cross from Joao Pedro alive. Welbeck slid from close range to complete his 100th goal. United immediately started charging and looked like they had an equalizer through Marcus Rashford, but he was caught offside.
With the exception of Brighton’s goal, the rest of the first half was mostly quiet. United put some pressure on the hosts, which Brighton managed to play well, with Yankuba Minteh ensuring that the Red Devils never settled with the ball and went to the half behind the
Zirkzee replaced Mason Mount at the start of the second half for United. The Seagulls started their second half with much more confidence, while United continued to pass it around the back like in the first half. After an hour of United playing second fiddle, Amad Dallio scored the equalizer after being played onside by Jan Paul van Heckle. Dallio’s run to the post was exceptional, managing to beat one man in the box and, despite the deflection, was awarded the goal. Ten Hag then brought in Alejandro Garnacho to substitute for Marcus Rashford.
In the 73rd minute, United had almost taken the lead in the game before VAR ruled against the goal when the last touch before the ball crossed the line came off Zirkzee’s knee, who was caught in an offside position who was trying to slide into Bruno Fernandes’ cross. In the 80th minute, Matthijs De Ligt made his Premier League debut when he substituted for Harry Maguire.
As the game went into extra time, Giorginio Rutter made his debut, coming off the bench as one of Brighton’s all-time most expensive buys at £40m. Joao Pedro scored the winning goal almost at the end of the match when Adingra, from the left side of the Penalty area, swung the ball to the back post, where Pedro, who was unmarked, headed to take home the game for the hosts.
In retrospect, perhaps United couldn’t press the game well enough despite scoring an equalizer. Brighton, on the other hand, kept their good record over the Red Devils intact as the youngest Premier League coach ever, Fabian Hurzeler, continued his good fortune with the Seagulls.
