New Delhi: Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has urged the leaders in the United squad to set up and help players who are “too anxious, too afraid” to perform amid the team’s successive defeats in all competitions, including three in the Premier League as they travel to Anfield to face table toppers, Liverpool, next.
United have registered just two matches since Amorim’s appointment in November and are only seven points above the relegation zone. Amorim was vocal about the fact that the strain of managing United, considered one of the most challenging jobs in the Premier League has taken its toll on him. He said, “You can see in my face, you can compare it to the way when I arrive and now.” Adding further, “Of course there is a lot of pressure. For me, it’s the pride and also the performance. It’s harder when we don’t perform well.”

In the period of eight days during the festive season, Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 2-0 to Wolves before slumping to a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle United. This was the first time since December and February 1979 that they had lost four league games in a row in the same season and the first four successive defeats since April 1909.
While talking about his players, he said, “They are anxious, sometimes afraid on the pitch.” He further added, “We are starving for leaders on the pitch.” He didn’t even shy away from taking the responsibility of being the most responsible performer to help his side improve. They are 23 points behind Liverpool, having played one game more, and have last won at Anfield in January 2016, having failed to register a single goal in the last five visits.
