Today’s stars, tomorrow’s Icons: Ranking the 15 best young managers in world football

New Delhi: Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, the two most iconic managers in world football both into their late 40s when they took charge of Manchester United and Arsenal respectively. In comparison, the current managers of both these clubs, were even younger when they were announced as managers. Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta took over as Gunners’ manager when he was just 37 years old and United have recently appointed 39-year-old Ruben Amorim as their new manager.

These appointments follow a recent trend in world football where clubs are more keen towards appointing a younger manager, rather than an older, more experienced one. Italian outfit Como, who are playing their first season in Serie A in over 20 years have decided to go into the season with former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas whereas Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, nearly missed out on being the Manager of the Year award at the recent Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Figuring out who the best young manager in world football currently is no child’s play but that’s that challenge we take on today. A number of different factors are needed to be taken into consideration before coming out with the list. Going purely by reputation, it will probably be Julian Nagelsmann but when putting things into context and looking at his team’s achievements, will he still remain at the top?

Criteria for the rankings

The rankings of the 15 best managers in world football are based on multiple criteria and not purely their trophies. While the number of trophies will of course help a particular manager’s case, other factors also need to be taken into account, such as:

Individual achievements
Impact on his team
Competitiveness of the league they’re in
Potential of the manager
Only considering managers below the age of 45

Note: Premier League trio of Kieran McKenna, Gary O’Neil and Russell Martin, all miss out on account of the poor start that their clubs have endured during the ongoing season. Both McKenna and Martin have proven their mettle in the lower leagues in England but are yet to deliver convincing results in the country’s top flight.
