Brighton’s quality proves too much
Chelsea made four changes, with Filip Jorgensen returning in goal, Levi Colwill replacing Tosin Adarabioyo, and Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez coming into the side. Despite a bright start, Chelsea lacked penetration, with Cole Palmer missing an early chance. Brighton, on the other hand, took control in the 27th minute when Mitoma produced a brilliant solo goal, cutting inside before curling his shot past Jorgensen.
The Blues pushed forward but struggled to create clear chances. Their problems worsened before half-time when Minteh capitalised on a defensive lapse to make it 2-0. Chelsea’s defence looked shaky, and Brighton exploited the gaps with precise counter-attacks.
Maresca’s men dominated possession after the break but lacked the composure needed to break down Brighton’s disciplined backline. Instead, Brighton punished them again on the hour mark. Colwill lost the ball in a dangerous area, allowing Danny Welbeck to set up Minteh, who finished confidently.
Chelsea made changes, with Reece James and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall coming on, but they struggled to make an impact. Brighton could have added more, with Joao Pedro missing two good chances and Mitoma forcing a strong save from Jorgensen. Chelsea’s only real moment of promise came late on when a Tyrique George cross nearly led to an own goal, but Brighton defended resolutely.
The defeat leaves Chelsea searching for answers ahead of their trip to Aston Villa. Brighton, meanwhile, celebrated a dominant performance, showing the kind of clinical finishing Chelsea sorely lacked.
