Premier League: Man City settle for draw; Aston Villa, Brentford claim three points

New Delhi: Matchday 15 started with disappointing news, with the Merseyside derby being postponed due to Storm Darragah. Liverpool will still remain at the top of the Premier League table despite the setback. After just a day’s break from the mid-week fixtures, Manchester City, having broken their losing streak, visited Crystal Palace.

Aside from this, Aston Villa hosted Southampton after a 3-1 win against Brentford as they start the weekend in fifth place. Newcastle managed to give Liverpool a 3-3 draw having dominated the field for most part of the restart. They visited Brentford coming to the draw with a lot of confidence.

Crystal Palace started aggressively against City, scoring the opening goal in the fourth minute with Daniel Munoz finding the back of the net from a beautiful left-footed pass from Will Hughes. City’s defence was constantly threatened by the Palace with many near calls. Man CIty regained after Erling Haaland rose to meet a deep cross from Matheus Nunez.

The game resumed at 1-1 with Palace still looking to press. Maxence Lawrence put the hosts ahead again when Hughes earned a corner for Palace before marking a brilliant assist. City were left reeling before Rico Lewis equalized from a nimble pass from Bernardo Silva. Lewis put the shot in the perfect corner. City failed to win the game and settled with one point.

Aston Villa were able to secure a 1-0 win over Southampton at Villa Park in what turned out to be one of the most boring games of the three fixtures. Villains were able to break the deadlock with Jhon Duran’s goal after Southampton’s defence squandered. There after the game almost came to a standstill.

While Aston Villa would be happy with the three points, the performance could have been more dominating. However, neither sides created chances. Ollie Watkins was the only one who came close a couple of times towards the end of the game. Villa will now sit happily at the fifth place before they face RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League in the midweek.

It was a goal fest as Brentford took on Newcastle at their home. Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock following Chrsitan Nogaard’s brilliant assist in just eight minutes from kickoff. Alexander Isak equalised within three minutes, with Jacob Murphy having ample time to cut it inside and the striker doing the rest. Yoanne Wissa got Brentford ahead again briefly after Harvey Barnes lost the ball. The striker had a good open space of 30 yards to run before striking the goal. Within four minutes, Newcastle had caught up with Barnes, redeeming himself with Murphy and cutting it back again.

With the game on balance, both teams needed that extra inch of energy in the second half to go through. It was the hosts who were better on the day. Mark Flekken, the Brentford goalkeeper, put a free-kick into the Newcastle box, and the defence’s sloppy effort meant centre-back Nathan Collins was able to bring the ball down before calmly slotting his side’s third goal. Kevin Schade scored the fourth goal in the 90th minute from Mbeumo’s assist to ensure all three points went to the Bees.

As Matchday 15 started a game later, Manchester City played a draw against Crystal Palace while Aston Villa edged away with a win in a boring paced game.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
