Premier League: Man United manager Ruben Amorim breaks the Manchester derby curse

New Delhi: Manchester United’s short trip across town to their noisy neighbours proved to be a successful one as the Red Devils snatched victory from the jaws of defeat right at the death. After the game got off to a cagey start, Josko Gvardiol put Manchester City ahead in the 36th minute via a beautiful header. That goal seemed to have sealed the three points for the hosts but United’s Amad Diallo had other ideas.

The Ivorian latched onto a wayward back pass from Matheus Nunes and ran into the penalty box before being fouled by the Portuguese International and winning the penalty for his side in the 86th minute. Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes stepped up and sent Ederson the wrong way to bring his side back on level terms. Just when it looked like Manchester City would have to settle for a draw, that chance was taken away from them as well.

Lisandro Martinez found Amad with a brilliant ball over the top of the City defence and the Ivorian produced an audacious lob over Ederson to get away from the keeper. He then squeezed the ball into the net from a tight angle to complete the comeback for his side. With this win, Ruben Amorim became the first Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win his debut Manchester Derby.

With this win over Manchester City, Amorim has etched his name into the history books forever. This was Amorim’s second win over Pep Guardiola in as many attempts this season and one that would sting the Catalan even more than the drubbing he endured against Amorim’s Sporting. The last Manchester United manager to win their first Manchester Derby, Sir Alex Ferguson, did so in back in the first Premier League season in the 1992/93 season.

Since then, there have been six different United managers that have faced and lost to their bitter rivals in their first attempt. David Moyes, Sir Ferguson’s hand picked successor at the club endured a humiliating 4-1 loss in his derby debut. Jose Mourinho, arguably the best Manchester United manager since Sir Ferguson retired, faced a 2-1 loss in his debut Manchester Derby.

Amorim’s predecessor, Erik Ten Hag, probably had the worse debut in the derby as his Manchester United side faced a proper drubbing away from home, losing 6-3 to the noisy neighbours in the 2022/23 season. Amorim’s win at the Etihad puts an end to Manchester City’s recent dominance in this fixture, with this being United’s first win at the Etihad since March 2021 when they beat City 2-0, a victory that coincidently, also included a Bruno Fernandes penalty.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United produced an incredible result against rivals Manchester City after they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat right at the death, breaking the club’s Manchester derby curse.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
