New Delhi: Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes has been sent off once again during Manchester United’s visit to the Molineux as the Red Devils are on course to losing their second successive game. The Portuguese midfielder was given the marching orders just after the game restarted after half-time and the score was still level. With the club down to 10-men for the majority of the second half, Wolves took advantage of that and snuck the lead.
Having already been booked in the first half, he flew into a late tackle on fellow Portuguese and Wolves captain, Nelson Semedo after he had given possession away. That late challenge let to Bruno being given his marching orders from the referee, Tony Harrington. This was the Manchester United’s captain third red card of the season, following his sending offs against Tottenham and FC Porto.

His erratic decision making when it comes to disciplinary issues has been a cause of concern for the club. In both of the games where he was sent off, United didn’t win either of those games, losing 3-0 to Spurs and drawing 3-3 to Porto. Even against Wolves, they went 1-0 down to a Matheus Cunha goal and then barreled to another loss after just losing in the last gameweek to Bournemouth. Cunha set up another goal in added time to make it a comfortable 2-0 win for the hosts.

With his red card against Wolves, he created some unwanted history for the club. He becomes the first Manchester United player since former club captain Nemanja Vidic to be sent off thrice in a single season. The legendary Manchester United defender was the last person to have been sent off thrice, during the 2008-09 season. While joining Vidic on any list is to be amongst elite company, he wouldn’t want to have been on this list.
Fernandes’ tally of three red cards this season is more than any other top-flight footballer this term. Southampton’s Jack Stephens and West Ham’s Edson Alvarez follow him close behind with two sending offs each. His sending off against Wolves sparked life into an otherwise drab fixture and his tendency to be sent off in important games would be something that Ruben Amorim would want to address considering he’s supposed to be a leader on the pitch.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, often regarded as the club’s best player currently, just scripted some unwanted history in the league game against Wolves. Dive in to find out what and how!
