New Delhi: 59 French “hooligans” have been taken into custody by German police ahead of Stuttgart vs. Paris St-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday. Both teams are still fighting for a play-off berth in the new league structure as Bundesliga club Stuttgart hosts Ligue 1’s PSG. Police claimed that after learning of anticipated altercations between the fan groups, they conducted “targeted checks” of supporters at hotels and rail stations.
47 Stuttgart supporters have also been banned, making it impossible for them to access the city center or attend the game. According to Stuttgart Police Vice President Carsten Hoefler, anyone who comes to Stuttgart to perpetrate violent crimes off the field will be removed from the game. To reduce the possibility of conflicts on the night of the game, the 59 French will remain in custody until Thursday.

The French hooligans were apprehended at Stuttgart’s major train station and many hotels following thorough investigations and tight collaboration with the Paris police, Stuttgart Police said in a statement. Masking substance was found among other items. After consulting with a judge, the Paris hooligans were placed under arrest until Thursday morning in order to avoid major riots until the conclusion of Wednesday’s Champions League encounter.
Going into the last group stage match, Stuttgart and PSG each have ten points. If either team wins, they will go to the playoffs; if they lose, they will be eliminated. Both clubs are still aiming to advance to the next round of the enlarged competition when they play each other at the MHP Arena. After seven games, PSG and Stuttgart both have ten points, and a victory for either would guarantee a berth in the playoffs.
