Seoul, South Korea: At least 62 people have died after a Jeju Air plane coming from Thailand, via Bangkok to Muan International Airport in Muan, South Korea crashed on Sunday morning during landing.
Amid local media reports that a bird strike was responsible for the crash, South Korean News agency released a video allegedly of the moment the bird strikes the plane.
Moment of Bird Hit That Doomed Jeju Air Flight
CNN reported that of the 181 people on board the Jeju Air 2216 flight, including 175 passengers and six crew members, at least 62 are dead, as of now. Two passengers have been rescued.
A video surfaced showing the plane crashing against the wall and the end of the runway at the Muan International Airport. All flights from Muan International Airport have been cancelled after the accident.
Why Did Jeju Air Flight 2216 Crash?
While South Korean aviation authorities and Jeju Air have not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the crash, a number of causes have come forward in reports. According to local fire department sources, the plane attempted to land without its landing gear deployed, which contributed to the crash.
A fire department official confirmed to CNN that the plane was “almost completely destroyed” by the fire following the crash. Photos shared by Yonhap showed the tail section as the only part of the plane still intact, though it was engulfed in flames.
