New Delhi: Radha Yadav, Deepti Sharma and debutants Saima Thakor and Tejal Hasabnis shined as India women registered a comfortable 59-run victory over New Zealand women in the first ODI match of the series in Ahmedabad. India now lead the three-match series 1-0. Left-arm spinner Radha displayed a leading act in bowling with figures of 4 for 42 while veteran Deepti scored 41 useful runs and also took a wicket.
Meanwhile, debutant pacer Saima Thakor inflicted the first blow in only the second ball of her international career, removing Suzie Bates (1) while another debutant Tejal Hasabnis scored 42 runs helping Smriti Mandhana bag her first victory as ODI captain of Indian team. Batting first, India scored 227 runs in 44.3 overs and were successful in restricting the opposition to 168/10 in 40.4 overs.

Shafali Verma played a fine knock of 33 runs in just 22 balls while Mandhana, who succeeded as a captain, failed to impress with the bat as she could just muster 5 runs. Wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia was impressive with the bat as she scored useful 37 runs while Jemimah Rodrigues, Tejal Hasabnis and Deepti Sharma contributed 35, 42 and 41 runs.
For New Zealand, Amelia Kerr picked up four wickets while Jess Kerr shined with three wickets. Eden Carson also contributed with two wickets. For the Kiwi women, Brooke Halliday top-scored with 39 runs while Maddy Green scored 31 runs. While the Kiwis looked on course for a win in the opening fixture of the series but Radha Yadav’s destructive spell put their dreams in the bin. Deepti Sharma and Arundhati Reddy contributed for India with a wicket apiece.
