Rafael Nadal on entry list for US Open, no confirmation over availability yet

New Delhi: Rafael Nadal was included in 2024 US Open’s main draw entry lists though he is yet to confirm his participation after skipping the Wimbledon to prepare for the Paris Olympics.

The four-time champion has missed the Grand Slam three times in the past four years.

The Spaniard benefited from a protected ranking of ninth to get a slot into the field at Flushing Meadows, where the tournament begins on August 26.

The 38-year-old has only returned to action at the Nordea Open, beating Leo Borg 6-3, 6-4 in his first singles match since May 27, when he was beaten in the first round of French Open by Alexander Zverev.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion last won in US Open in 2019, having last played in the tournament in 2022 and was among 14 players to get a main-draw spot due to a protected raining.

Top ranked men’s singles player Jannik Sinner and World No.1 womens singles star Iga Swiatek lead the men’s and women’s fields.

Italian Sinner is the reigning Australian Open champion while Swiatek won her third straight French Open title in June.

World No. 2 and defending champion Djokovic are at No. 2 so is her women’s counterpart Coco Gauff.

Reigning French and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz has a chance to be the first player since Nadal in 2010 to win the three Grand Slams in the same year.

Defending Reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, who had to skip Wimbledon due to injury, and Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova are also included the field.

Sixteen wild cards and 16 qualifier each for men and women were included in the US Open field.

Rafael Nadal’s protected ranking of ninth helped him get a slot into the field at US Open, which begins on August 26.  Tennis Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
