Rare cylindrical clouds show up over Sydney – what are they?

New Delhi: Amid the scorching heat, colouds in the skies appear, offering only hope that could bring some relief. Clouds are a visible collection of small droplets of water or ice crystals in Earth’s atmosphere and differ greatly in shape, size, and colour. Clouds have often been seen in white colour because of the tightly packed, tiny water droplets inside them, which reflect most of the sunlight that hits their surface. Various shapes of clouds sometimes appear in the shape of animals like elephants, horses, rabbits, and many more. Such shapes are not surprising, as we have been witnessing them since our childhood. What surprised people was the formation of bizarre rolls of cloud stretching for hundreds of kilometers, spanning the entire length of Sydney, in the skies of New South Wales on Tuesday.

What leads to the formation of such shape of clouds?

Residents across locations in Greater Sydney, the north coast, and the south coast captured the bizarre phenomenon and flooded the social media platform with epic pictures, showing the uniquely shaped clouds over various locations of the city. While some netizens were surprised, others were seen as a bit curious. Among several posts and comments, many questioned what the clouds actually were.

Cylindrical clouds, also termed roll clouds, are long tube-like clouds that are rare across the globe. Roll clouds are detached from other cloud structures, which makes them separate from other horizontal clouds, such as a shelf cloud on the leading edge of a thunderstorm. Such clouds are formed when wind shear across a horizontal boundary causes uplift and cloud formation, but only in a shallow vertical slab of air. This is also the reason that such cloud formations are rarely seen across the globe. Notably, cylindrical clouds are formed high up in the atmosphere.
