New Delhi: In a significant move for the Welsh club, Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has officially joined Championship side Swansea City as an investor and co-owner, taking a minority stake. The announcement was confirmed by the club on Monday, April 14th, 2025.

The 39-year-old Croatian captain, widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation and a Ballon d’Or winner (2018), will join the existing ownership group comprising Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Jason Cohen in South Wales. This marks Modrić’s first venture into football club ownership.

Despite his ongoing illustrious playing career, his contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of this season. Modric expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter off the pitch. “This is an exciting opportunity,” Modric stated via the club website. “Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase, and the ambition to compete at the highest level.”

He added, highlighting the experience he brings, “Playing at the highest level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club. My goal is to support the club’s growth in a positive way and to help to build an exciting future.”

Swansea City warmly welcomed the decorated midfielder, stating: “Swansea City is delighted to announce that Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has joined the club as an investor and co-owner. Luka’s investment in the club is an endorsement of the club’s ambition and vision. He will play a key role in helping the club garner global attention and progress both on and off the pitch.”

Club CEO Tom Gorringe echoed this sentiment: “I am excited that Luka has come on board as an investor and co-owner. There is no better role model in the game for our players, from the academy right through to the first team. His endorsement of our ambition and willingness to support us on our journey will be instrumental as we aim to continue to improve our results on and off the pitch.”

What next?

Swansea currently sits 12th in the EFL Championship table, having earned 54 points from 42 matches under the guidance of caretaker manager Alan Sheehan. Their next fixture sees them host Hull City on Friday. Modric’s investment is not expected to impede his playing commitments. His immediate focus on the field remains with Real Madrid as they face a crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow (Wednesday, April 16th), where they hope to overturn a 3-0 deficit from the first leg.

Croatia’s Luka Modric takes a new step in his career by becoming a minority investor and co-owner at Swansea City, aiming to support the club’s future.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
