New Delhi: The track and field competitions of the National Games ended with three nee records as Services looked set to maintain their top position in the standings for the fifth time in last six editions.

Uttar Pradesh’s javeliner Sachin Yadav, Haryana’s high jumper Pooja Singh and Himachal Pradesh’s long distance runner Sawan Barwal set National Games records to win gold medals on Wednesday.

With a throw of 84.39m, the 25-year-old Yadav bettered Rajinder Singh’s mark of 82.23m achieved in 2015, becoming the fifth best throw by an Indian after Neeraj Chopra’s 89.94m, Kishore Kumar Jena’s 87.54m, Shivpal Singh’s 86.23m and Davinder Singh Kang’s 84.57m.

Pooja defended her high jump title with a leap of 1.84m, improving on 1.83m of Swapna Barman registered in 2022. It was just under her personal best of 1.85m, a national U-20 record that she achieved last year.

Barwal clocked a timing of 13 minute and 45.93 seconds to win the men’s 5000m race, breaking G Lakshmanan’s mark of 13:50.05s set in 2015.

It was Barman’s second consecutive National Games record in this edition on way to two gold medals, having won the men’s 10,000m title with a record timing of 28:49.93s to go past Gulveer Singh’s 28:54.29s in 2022.
