New Delhi: Since the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the Indian team management is pondering over the crucial call of who to appoint as the new skipper for the Test side. While Rohit will continue to lead India in the ODIs and Suryakumar Yadav is the skipper of the T20I side, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the verge of finalising a name.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the frontrunners for the captain’s role while pace spreadhead Jasprit Bumrah’s name has also come up for the captain’s role. With much said and done, the decision of announcing the next skipper along with India’s squad for the five-match Test series in England next month has been delayed from a while.
New skipper, squad announcement on Saturday
According to a report published in India Today, the Indian squad for the England tour would be announced on Saturday, May 24. The report further suggests that the announcement would be made around 12 PM. Additionally, a selection meeting would be taking place on the same day which would be followed by a press conference where the announcement will be made.
A report which was published on Sky Sports couple of days ago mentioned that the Indian cricket board officials have also had informal talks with both Gill and Pant but still they are undecided over their final decision. The selectors have been divided over both the players with some favouring Pant over Gill while the others favouring the right-handed batter over the wicketkeeper.
Both Rohit and Kohli retired from the longest format in a span of just 6 days. It was also rumoured that Rohit wanted to retire midway like MS Dhoni did but the proposal was rejected by the BCCI citing consistency issues on the tour. For Kohli, it is being learnt that he expressed his desire to lead the Indian team but the selectors were in favour of a young captain.
The date has been revealed for the announcement of India’s new Test captain and the squad for the tour to England which begins on June 20. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
