Rift in Team India? Rohit-Shami involved in heated spat over skipper’s injury remarks

New Delhi: Is everything not well between Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and star pacer Mohammed Shami? Amid Shami’s continued absence from Team India despite him proving his fitness by turning up regularly for Bengal in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024, a report has made a sensational claim about a heated exchange between the pacer and Indian skipper Rohit.

Shami, who last featured for India in the ODI World Cup last year, underwent ankle surgery earlier this year after missing the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the T20 World Cup 2024. He played his first competitive match in a year for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy last month and was expected to make his comeback for India in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia.

Shami made a roaring comeback in the Ranji Trophy where he picked up seven wickets in his first game against Madhya Pradesh. He has since continued to do well for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, the pacer has not been deemed fit yet to travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

After India’s 10-wicket defeat in the 2nd Test against Australia in Adelaide, Rohit was asked for an update on Shami and the pacer’s chances of playing in the remainder of the series. The Indian skipper said the pacer is still being monitored as he has some swelling in his knee. Rohit further stated that Shami’s fitness is being monitored and the team management doesn’t want to take any chances unless the pacer is 100 per cent fit.

Rohit and Shami were involved in heated exchange, claims report

After Rohit’s recent comments on Shami, a report in the Hindi daily Dainik Jagran has made a sensational claim regarding a heated exchange between the pacer and the Indian captain. As per the report, the duo were involved in a verbal spat during India’s home Test series against New Zealand last month after Rohit’s remarks on Shami’s injury.

On the eve of the first Test against New Zealand, when asked about Shami’s fitness, Rohit said that the pacer had a swollen knee and that he was in doubt for the Australia Test series. His comments came days after Shami had refuted media reports that he suffered a fresh injury setback while undergoing recovery at the NCA.

Rohit’s comments led to a heated conversation between the duo, as per the report. “When Shami was at NCA, he met Rohit during the 1st Test in Bengaluru. During their meeting, the two had a heated exchange over the captain’s remark on Shami when asked about his current status and availability for the New Zealand and Australia Test series,” the report stated.

The claims in the report have brought a fresh twist to the Shami saga as many are left wondering why is the pacer still waiting in India when he has already proven his fitness by playing back-to-back 8 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. On Monday, Shami scored an unbeaten 32 with the bat and finished with figures of 1/25 off his 4 overs as Bengal beat Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal of the T20 tournament.

Rohit Sharma was reporetdly involved in a heated argument with Mohammed Shami over his ‘swollen knee’ remark when asked about India pacer’s injury status during the New Zealand Test series at home.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
