Mumbai: Renowned industrialist and Tata chairman emeritus Ratan Tata passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday night, October 9, at 86. He had been unwell for some time and was under medical care at Breach Candy Hospital, where a dedicated team of doctors attended to him. Recently, he visited the hospital for a routine check-up, later assuring followers on social media that there was no serious health concern.
Born in 1937, Ratan Tata symbolised Indian entrepreneurship. He guided the Tata group into a global force as India’s economy opened up in the 1990s. Under his leadership, Tata acquired global brands like Tetley, Corus Steel, and Jaguar Land Rover, solidifying its reputation as a respected corporate brand in India. Despite his remarkable achievements, he remained humble and often spoke of missing out on simple joys, such as walking his dog in a park or buying movie tickets in a line.
“With a deep sense of loss, we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader whose unparalleled contributions have influenced not only the Tata Group but also the essence of our nation,” Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran shared in a statement.
“On behalf of the entire Tata family, I offer our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will remain a source of inspiration as we continue to uphold the values he held dear,” he added. Tata assumed leadership of the autos-to-steel conglomerate in 1991 and managed the group, which his great-grandfather established over a century ago, until 2012.
In 1996, he launched Tata Teleservices in the telecom sector and took Tata Consultancy Services public in 2004. In December 2012, Ratan Tata retired as Chairman of Tata Sons, handing over the leadership to Cyrus Mistry. Following his retirement, he was honoured with the title of chairman emeritus for Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.
