Rohan Bopanna only Indian left in Wimbledon after Yuki Bhambri’s second-round exit

New Delhi: India’s campaign at the Wimbledon 2024 suffered a blow after Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti made a second-round exit from the Championships. The Indo-French pair went down to Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in three sets.

Bhambri and Olivetto squandered a one-game lead before going down 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to the eight seed Germans in two hours and five minutes on Friday. The opening round victory for the Indo-French pair had raised their confidence but unfortunately, they could not continue it in the second round. The duo had downed Kazakh pair of Alexander Bublik and Alexander Shevchenko in the opening round.

Bopanna only Indian left in tournament

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the lone Indian left in the campaign veteran Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Mathew Ebden will be action in the second round. The second seeds, who are the reigning Australian Open champions, will face Germany’s Hendrik Jebens and Constantin Frantzen in the game. Bopanna is the only Indian left in the tournament as Olympic-bound Sumit Nagal and N Sriram bowed out of the tournament earlier this week.

Alcaraz special on Friday

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz survived a brutal encounter with Frances Tiafoe at Wimbledon on Friday to keep his title defence on track with a 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win. The exciting five-set thriller, which lasted for nearly fours hours, saw Tiafoe testing Alcaraz till the end. The Spanish third seed was out-hit and out-fought for large periods of the match on Centre Court by his US opponent but found an extra gear when he needed to.

Alcaraz, who is bidding to become only the sixth man to win the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back beat Serbian sensation Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final game last year. He will face America’s Brandon Nakashima or 16th seed Ugo Humbert of France in the fourth round as he seeks a fourth Grand Slam title at the tender age of 21.
