Thiruvananthapuram : After withholding for two years, Right to Information Commission (RTI) has ordered the release of the Justice Hema Commission report which is set to reveal the details of the misdeeds and unhealthy aspects that was prevalent in the Malayalam film industry including incidents of casting couch, allegations of harassment and disparity over payment on gender basis.
The decision to reveal the details of the report comes after the State Information Commission (SIC) ordered the Kerala government to release the report compiled by Justice Hema Commission, which was appointed to study the problems in the film industry in 2017 after the sensational actress assault case where a prominent actor was sexually assaulted in a moving car. The order was issued by State Information Commissioner Dr AA Abdul Hakim.
The commission also directed that no information should be withheld except what is prohibited under the RTI Act.
The report is believed to contain highly sensitive information that could shake Kerala’s film and cultural sphere. Earlier the cultural department had repeatedly denied requests from the reports copy from Individuals and the commission.
The Hema Commission was constituted to address issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in the Malayalam film industry. It had recommended key provisions to prohibit illegal and offending acts against women in the sector.
“It is a welcome step and we hope the report in the committee will help in preventing abuses against women in the industry. More than the revelations, the report and the discussions following should come up with steps that needs to be initiated wherein a cordial and women friendly environment persist so that everyone in the film industry irrespective of the gender can work in a healthier environment”, said Sajitha Madathil, Malayalam film actor to the media.
The Justice Hema Commission is one of the first of its kind that studies the issues that studies the problems faced by women in the film industry, the denial of justice and the working conditions.
