New Delhi: Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal went berserk as India shattered the world record for the fastest team fifty in the history of Test cricket. Rohit and Jaiswal took the Bangladesh bowlers to the cleaners right from the word go in India’s first innings of the ongoing 2nd Test between the two teams at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Rohit and Jaiswal helped India breach the 50-run mark in just three overs to break England’s record. England had claimed the record earlier this year after reaching the 50-run mark in 4.2 overs in a Test match against West Indies at Trent Bridge. However, it was some ‘Ro-Ball’ and ‘Jais-Ball’ at the display at the Green Park in Kanpur as the two Indian openers toyed with the Bangladesh bowlers.
Chasing Bangladesh’s first innings total of 233 runs after only 35 overs of action on the first three days of the rain-marred Test match, Rohit and Jaiswal made their intent clear from the onset of India’s first innings on Day 4. Jaiswal slammed a hat-trick of fours against pacer Hasan Mahmud in the first over of India’s innings before Rohit went on a six-hitting spree against Khaled Ahmed in the 2nd over.
The Indian skipper stepped out to dispatch a huge six over long-on on the very first ball of the 2nd over from Mahmud before smashing a second consecutive six on the next delivery. Jaiswal ended the over with a boundary on the last ball to get 17 runs from it after India got 12 runs from the first over. It was absolute carnage as Mahmud returned to bowl his second over.
Rohit welcomed the pacer with a huge six of the first ball before Mahmud bowled a rare no-ball with the Hitman stealing a single off it. Jaiswal took over as he hammered a six and two straight fours to end the over with a whopping 22 runs coming from it. With the help of the 22-run over, India recorded the fastest-ever team fifty in the history of Test cricket in just 3 overs.
Fastest Team fifty in Test cricket history:
3.0 Overs – India vs Bangladesh, Kanpur, 2024
4.2 Overs – England vs West Indies, Nottingham, 2024
4.3 Overs – England vs South Africa, The Oval, 1994
4.6 Overs – England vs Sri Lanka, Manchester, 2002
5.2 Overs – Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, Karachi, 2004
Rohit continued with his aggressive approach after India raced away to the 50-run mark off just 18 balls and eventually perished for a quickfire 23 off 11 balls after being outfoxed by spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Miraz bowled a tossed-up delivery which spun sharply to bamboozle Rohit and rattle his stumps in the 4th over of India’s innings.
India notch up fastest team 100 in Test cricket
However, Jaiswal continued the carnage on the other end after Rohit’s departure as he combined with Shubman Gill to help India create the record for the fastest team hundred in Test cricket. Gill and Jaiswal joined hands to keep going after the Bangladeshi bowlers as the duo helped India breach the 100-run mark in just 10.1 overs.
India broke their own record which they created after smashing 100 runs in 12.2 overs in a Test match against West Indies at the Port of Spain last year. Jaiswal departed after a fiery 72 off 51 balls as India lost their second wicket in the 15th over. The young left-hander missed out on a well-deserved hundred but managed to do the job his team wanted from him.
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided India with a cracking start in their first innings of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh to smash the record for the fastest team fifty in Test history. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
