New Delhi: Team India’s ODI skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to be back in action for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. According to a Cricbuzz report, the T20 World Cup-winning captain ‘may make himself available’ for the ODIs against Sri Lanka.
It was reported that KL Rahul will lead in the ODI series, but now Rohit will captain the side. Multiple reports suggested that Rohit will not take part in the ODI series against Sri Lanka after playing non-stop cricket for the last six months, but after discussions with new head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Indian opener has changed his decision.
The Men in Blue will only play six ODIs before next year’s champions trophy and it was decided that Rohit should play in the series as the new coach wants to put a plan in motion for next year’s big event.
Rohit has already got a one-month break after India’s T20 World Cup win. He recently attended a Wimbledon semi-final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev at the centre court. He later flew to the USA to attend a couple of events.
The Cricbuzz report also added that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper who was excluded from BCCI’s central contract list, is expected to be back for the three-match ODI series. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the 50-over series due to some personal reasons.
Virat and Bumrah rested for the ODI series
Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are unlikely to participate in the ODI series against Sri Lanka as both players requested a long break after the T20 World Cup. Both star players will be back for the home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand starting from September.
After the home season, the Men in Blue will face Australia in the five-match Test series starting on November 22. The next three-Test series are also crucial for India’s chances of reaching their third consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final.
