RVNL and Jindal Stainless have swung into the spotlight on September 6, with both companies saying that they would benefit from orders to manufacture Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. At 12:50 pm on September 6, Jindal Stainless moved up Rs 12.40 (1.72%) and reached Rs 732.05 despite the broader Sensex 30 suffering an erosion of 817.98 (1%) and reaching 81,383.70. Shares of RVNL, a Navaratna PSU, however, dipped by Rs 10.35 or 1.78% to reach Rs 571.50.
The first coaches made with Jindal Stainless products are expected to be sent out from the Bengaluru factory of BEML on September 20. According to the company, these coaches might be officially flagged off by the end of this year.
Prestigious project
“Jindal Stainless has supplied high-strength tempered 301LN grade austenitic stainless steel for this prestigious government project,” the company has said in a statement. The product of the company is believed to offer improved durability of the bogies that would eventually reduce the costs related to the life-cycle of these coaches. The stainless steel supplied by the company for the high-profile Vande Bharat trains are resistant to corrosion and, therefore, more reliable.
“The use of…stainless steel will lead to reduction in the weight of each coach by approximately two tonnes. This weight reduction will lead to improved energy efficiency and a lower carbon footprint, aligning with the sustainability goals of modern rail transport. The enhanced safety and aesthetic appeal of this new train symbolises innovation and engineering excellence of the Indian Railways,” PTI quoted Jindal Stainless MD Abhyuday Jindal as saying.
Manufacture and maintenance for RVNL
On the other hand, RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd) announced commissioning of its factory in Latur in Maharashtra on September 5. It will manufacture 1,920 Vande Bharat sleeper coaches and also has the responsibility of maintaining those for 35 years.

This milestone is part of RVNL’s commitment to modernising India’s railway network. With 1,920 Vande Bharat sleeper coaches set to be manufactured and maintained for 35 years, this project is driving employment, skill development, and the vision of a #ViksitBharat @2047,” RVNL wrote on X.
