New Delhi: World number one Aryna Sabalenka has revealed that she wrote to Coco Gauff to apologise for her “completely unprofessional” remarks after the French Open final loss against the American star.

Sabalenka lost the final at Roland Garros, which extended her wait for a Grand Slam title on Clay Court, after an error-laden performance.

The Belarusian lost the summit clash to third seed Gauff 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 earlier this month, but she was in the limelight for her post-match comments more than her performance.

Following the loss, Sabalenka told the press it was the “worst final I ever played”, adding: “I think she won the match not because she played incredible (but)  just because I made all of those mistakes.”

Now that the dust has settled at the 2025 edition, Sabalenka has said she “absolutely regretted” her remarks.

“I let my emotions get the better of me”

The French Open loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the three-time Grand Slam singles champion, who has lost both of the Major finals she has reached this year.

Before losing to Gauff in the Paris final, Sabalenka lost to Madison Keys in the Australian Open final, where she entered the tournament as a two-time defending champion.

The frustration was a result of her erratic performance against the American as she committed 70 unforced errors and failed to keep her nerves under control.

“That was just completely unprofessional of me,” Sabalenka told Eurosport Germany. “I let my emotions get the better of me.

“I absolutely regret what I said back then. We all make mistakes. I’m just a human being who’s still learning in life. I think we all have those days when we lose control. The difference with me is the world is watching,” she added.

Sabalenka will kick off her grass-court season as a top-seeded player at the Berlin Open. She will be aiming to regain her form and composure in the Wimbledon that gets underway on June 30.
