New Delhi: Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on the duo of Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill after their stunning centuries in the 1st Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. Gill and Pant played brilliant knocks to help India post 287/4 (declared) in their second innings and set Bangladesh a daunting target of 515 runs with a mammoth lead.
Resuming India’s 2nd innings from 81/3 on Day 3 of the Test match on Sunday, Gill and Pant continued their flawless run with the bat. Pant was the first to complete his ton after putting the Bangladesh spinners to the sword during his innings. He smashed 109 runs before getting caught and bowled against Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Gill continued his stellar show after Pant’s dismissal and notched up an unbeaten 119 to help India breach the 500-run mark in terms of their overall lead. While Pant equalled MS Dhoni’s record for most centuries by a wicket-keeper batter for India, Gill went past Kohli on the list of batters with the most centuries for India in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Tendulkar took to his X account to laud both the batters for their magnificent tons. “Loved watching @ShubmanGill glide his way to a hundred. And @RishabhPant17 , despite being away from the longer format for quite some time, looks as sharp as ever. Great to see both of them in such fine rhythm,” the Master Blaster, who holds the record for most Test tons by an Indian against Bangladesh, wrote in his tweet.

Gill and Pant were involved in a brilliant stand of 167 runs for the 4th wicket for the hosts as they helped India finish with 287/4 (declared) in their second innings. Thanks to the duo’s heroics, India got enough time to pick up some crucial wickets after putting Bangladesh to bat in their second innings in the Test match.
Ashwin derails Bangladesh’s run-chase
Asked to chase down a mammoth target of 515 runs in their second innings, Bangladesh did get off to a good start with an opening stand of 62 runs between their openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan. However, Ashwin derailed the visitors’ momentum with a brilliant spell. The off-spinner picked up three wickets to finish with figures of 3/63 off his 15 overs and reduce Bangladesh to 158/4 at stumps on Day 3.
Bangladesh are still far away from the target as they need 357 runs to win with only 6 wickets in hand. Meanwhile, India are on the cup of completing a thumping victory to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.
