New Delhi: The world’s lowest-ranked team, San Marino, made history on Monday after coming from behind to win the away game against Liechtenstein 3-1 and obtain a stunning promotion to the third tier of the Nations League. The minnows secured their second win in 20 years and first away win and now hold a chance of being in the World Cup play-offs.
Marino fell a goal down just before half-time but rallied in the second half to score three times and claim a priceless victory—all thanks to Lorenzo Lazzari, Alessandro Golinucci, and Nicola Nanni’s penalty. It was the minnows’ second win in two decades just three months after managing their first on September 5th when they ended the longest winless run in international football [140 games] with a 1-0 victory over Liechtenstein.

This was the first time San Marino have scored twice in their history while they have also never managed to come from behind to win a game. The president of the Dan Marino Football Federation, Marco Tura after winning the match said, “Apart from suffering the serious risk of heart attack, all I can say is that these boys made history tonight.”
San Marino’s players charged onto the pitch after securing promotion to League C at the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz. They are currently ranked 210th in the FIFA men’s rankings. La Serenissima have been building up for their historic Nations League campaign having played draws in friendly matches against Seychelles, Saint Lucia, and Saint Kitts and Nevis over the period of two years.

Not only have they achieved a promotion, San Marino now holds a chance of being in the World Cup play-offs in March 2026, although it still depends on results in the qualifying groups over the next 12 months.
