New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have roped in young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad was ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 last week after suffering an elbow fracture. One of CSK’s most reliable batters, Gaikwad injury came as a huge blow for the five-time champions.
17-year-old Mhatre, who attended CSK trails last year, is highly rated in the Mumbai cricketing circle. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2024-25 season in the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal and did well for the team. He has 504 runs to his name in nine first-class matches, including two centuries and a solitary fifty.
He has also scored 458 runs in 7 List A matches with two tons and a solitary fifty but is yet to play a T20 in his career. Mhatre was part of the India U-19 team in the U-19 Asia Cup last year and scored 176 runs in five matches. Mhatre is expected to link up with the Chennai Super Kings squad ahead of their next game against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians on Sunday, April 20.
Chennai Super Kings have made a woeful start to the season with five losses and a solitary victory in their first six matches. CSK won their opening game against Mumbai Indians but have since lost five matches in a row and are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table. MS Dhoni is leading the five-time champions again after skipper Gaikwad was ruled out due to his elbow injury.

Ferguson left the field after sustaining an injury while bowling during PBKS’ clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last game. While his injury remains unspecified, he has been ruled out indefinitely.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), on the other hand, have roped in Karnataka batter Ravichandran Smaran as a replacement for injured Aussie spinner Adam Zampa. Zampa has been ruled out of the season due to an unspecified injury. SRH have not gone for a direct replacement for the spinner and have opted to further bolster their batting by roping in Smaran, who has so far played seven first-class games in his career and has scored over 500 runs at an average of 64.50.
