Saurya Airlines Aircraft Crash: Know About History of Deadly Crashes in Nepal

 Kathmandu: Saurya Airlines aircraft crashed with 19 onboard while attempting to take off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Wednesday at 11 AM, Nepal state television reported.

The Himalyan Nation has a long history of Plane crashes due to its rough terrain. 

According to the Aviation Safety database, there have been at least 27 fatal plane crashes in Nepal over the past 30 years.

At least 72 people died after ATR 72 Aircraft belonging to Yati Airlines Aircraft crashed in Nepal’s Pokhara in 2023. The aircraft, carrying 68 passengers and four crew members, crashed approximately 20 minutes after taking off from Kathmandu en route to Pokhara, just a few kilometers away from its destination.

A Tara Airline plane with 22 people onboard including 4 Indians crashed in Mustang, District in 2022. Bodies of all the passengers were recovered after 3 days of the crash. 

Twin Crashes of February 2016

On February 26, 2016, an Air Kashthamandap aircraft with 11 people on board crashed in Nepal’s Kalikot district, killing two crew members and injuring all nine passengers. Earlier, on February 24, 2016, a Tara Airlines aircraft crashed in Myagdi district, claiming 23 lives. These incidents became known as the “Twin Crashes of February 2016.”

Tribhuvan Airport: One of the Riskiest Airports in the World

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport is one of the riskiest airports in the world. It has a table top single runway with a length of 3350 meters. Tribhuvan airport serves as the main international airport of the country as well as the capital city of Kathmandu, connecting 40 destinations in 17 countries.  It was ranked the second-worst airport in a survey in 2016 in Asia based on security and services. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, 70 accidents have occurred in the airport claiming about 650 lives till date.

2018: 49 people died with US-Bangla Airline onboard 67 passengers and four crew members crashed at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International airport crashed in Tribhuvan International Airport in March 2018. 

2015: A Turkish Airlines plane made a crash landing on the runway of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.
