Sawan Shivratri 2024: Auspicious Jalabhishek date, timings and puja muhurat

Sawan Shivratri 2024: Auspicious Jalabhishek date, timings and puja muhurat

Mumbai: As the Sawan month brings the much-awaited Kanwar Yatra, devotees across the nation are preparing to perform Jalabhishek — the ritual bathing of Lord Shiva with holy Ganga water. This year, however, devotees will enjoy an extended window for performing this sacred ritual. The Shivratri celebrations will span three days, providing a unique opportunity for enhanced devotion.

Every year, the Kanwar Yatra begins at the start of the Sawan month and continues until its end. Traditionally, devotees complete their pilgrimage by performing Jalabhishek on Shivratri itself. This involves bringing Ganga water in Kanwars and offering it to Lord Shiva.

Since Chaturdashi Tithi spans two days this year, devotees can perform Jalabhishek on both August 2 and 3.

Auspicious timings for Jalabhishek

This year, devotees have the special opportunity to perform Jalabhishek not just on Shivratri but also on the following days.

August 1: From 3:55 PM to 7:56 PM
August 2: From sunrise to 9:35 AM, and from 4:02 PM to 7:50 PM
August 3: From sunrise to 9:30 AM

Perform Jalabhishek during the specified muhurats for optimal results. The early morning hours, especially within 2 hours and 24 minutes after sunrise, are considered most auspicious. While these timings are considered highly auspicious, Jalabhishek can be performed at any time during the day.

Also, August 2 is noted for Ardra Nakshatra, which is deemed particularly favourable for Shiva Puja. Additionally, Pradosh Kaal on August 1 is also a significant time.
