New Delhi: With the change in the seasons, respiratory illnesses see an upsurge. The shift from October to November is when winter chills start feeling upright. The chilly air by the evening, dry weather conditions, smog that triggers respiratory diseases like lung health, sore throats and coughs. But this sudden change in weather and poor environmental conditions leads to viral infections and worsens the Asthma and COPD conditions in patients.

Dr Vivek Anand Padegal, Director – Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore shared about the link between Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), he said, “These are chronic respiratory conditions that affect millions worldwide. These conditions can be exacerbated during the monsoon season due to various factors, including viral infections.

Viral-Induced Asthma

• Rhinovirus (HRV): The usual suspect behind the common cold, HRV is also a champion at triggering asthma attacks. It causes up to 70 per cent of them!

• Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Another asthma and COPD villain, RSV is a common culprit in wheezing illnesses, especially in children.

• The Gang of Others: Enteroviruses, bocaviruses, coronaviruses, parainfluenza, influenza, and adenoviruses can all join the wheezing party in your airways.

Treatment:

• Reduce Your Risk: Frequent handwashing, avoiding crowds, masking in crowded indoor places and getting enough sleep can help you dodge those nasty viruses.

• Vaccines: Get your flu shot every year and talk to your doctor about other vaccines that might be helpful.

• Know When to Test: If your symptoms are severe, get tested for influenza to ensure you get the right treatment.

• Medication is Mighty: If you have asthma or COPD, take your medications regularly as prescribed by your doctor.

Monsoon Challenges for Asthma and COPD Patients

Increased Allergens and Viral Exposure: During the monsoon, allergens such as dust and mites increase, and viral infections become more widespread. Untreated colds and flu are prevalent, posing challenges for asthma patients trying to maintain a normal life.

Reducing Risk: While preventing infections entirely is challenging, individuals can take precautions to reduce their risk. These include maintaining good hygiene, avoiding crowded places, and seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms worsen.
