Serie A: AC Milan sack head coach Paulo Fonseca after just six months in charge

New Delhi: Italian giants AC Milan have announced the departure of head coach Paulo Fonseca after the Rossoneri failed to capture three points at home to AS Roma last night. The 19-time Italian champions had been in a patchy run of form under Fonseca and a 1-1 draw to a struggling Roma side at home proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the 51-year-old Portuguese manager.

Fonseca was only appointed as AC Milan head coach in the summer after the departure of former manager Stefano Pioli but was only able to last six months in the role. He was handed a three-year deal at the club in June after leading LOSC Lille to a fourth placed finish in Ligue 1 last season but left the French outfit by mutual consent after failing to secure UEFA Champions League football.

The former FC Porto boss had previously worked in Serie A with AS Roma and that seemed to have worked in his favour while landing the job. However, life in Milan didn’t get off to a great start for him as he failed to win the opening three league games. He then stitched a four game winning streak in the league but AC Milan’s form since that streak ended had been extremely inconsistent.

Since Milan’s 3-0 win over Lecce in September, the club had only won four of the 11 games that they’d participated in. This run has left them in eighth position in the league table. In 17 games, Milan have only managed 27 points till now and are currently eight points behind the last UEFA Champions League spot. While their league form hasn’t been great, things aren’t much better in Europe as well as they sit 12th in the Champions League table and as things stand, they aren’t qualifying for the knockouts automatically.

Former Porto manager Sérgio Conceição to be the replacement

AC Milan have announced the departure of Paulo Fonseca after reportedly securing his replacement. They are in talks to replace the Portuguese former FC Porto manager with another Portuguese former FC Porto manager with Sérgio Conceição being earmarked as the man to lead the Rossoneri. The 50-year-old had been available since leaving the Portuguese side at the end of last season after seven years in charge.

He has been a free agent since the summer and hasn’t rushed back into management. He has been linked with various Premier League jobs and was reportedly on West Ham’s radar as well as a potential Julen Lopetegui replacement but is reportedly holding out for the AC Milan role. It is reported that he didn’t accept three offers from clubs across Europe and South America as he knows of Milan’s interest.
