Seven players of Zambian football club killed in tragic bus crash

New Delhi: Seven players of Zambian football club Chavuma Town Council FC tragically lost their lives in a bus crash. Chavuma Town’s players were on their way to Mufumbwe in the northwestern part of the country when their bus met with a tragic accident on Saturday, October 26. Several players were left injured while at least seven of them lost their lives.

Chavuma Town Council FC competes in the third tier of Zambian football and were travelling for a FAZ Provincial Division one league match. The bus carrying the squad met with an accident in Lukunyi and overturned. The news of the death of seven players of the football club sent shockwaves across the country, leaving the fans and others in mourning.

FAZ, Zambia’s football association in a statement expressed deep shock over the incident and sent their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. The association also said that it is working with the civil and law authorities to determine the cause of the accident that took the lives of seven footballers of the Chavuma Town Council FC.

“We are in touch with the football, civil and law enforcement authorities in the province to furnish us with full details,” Faz president Andrew Kamanga was quoted as saying by the BBC.

As per a report in BBC, at least 12 others on the bus have sustained injuries and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lusaka. Those injured were evacuated from the bus after the tragic accident and taken to the hospital. However, the club is yet to release the names of the players who lost their lives and those who sustained injuries in the accident.

African Football Association pays tribute

Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Patrice Motsepe paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic bus accident and prayed for the recovery of the injured in a statement.

“I convey my personal and Caf’s deepest condolences. May God comfort and console the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased and the Football Association of Zambia,” Motsepe said in a statement.

“May the souls of the departed players rest in eternal peace,” he added.
